What are some neat-O places to go in Chicago?
-
Like a dunce, I live about an hour from Chicago, but have not really been there. The hubby and I are planning to go there for a weekend in a couple of weeks, and I would like some suggestions on fun things to do while there. We are planning to go the museum of science & industry on one of the days. We've been there, and we've been to the Shedd & Shield before, too. Suggestions on places to see, shop, and eat ( cool food markets, anyone? Like Market St. Station in Philadelphia?).... would be really appreciated. Is there anywhere in Chicago that does horse carriage rides? I really want to get some nice pictures of the horses. Thanks!

I've been living in Chicago for 4 years and LOVE IT: Fun things to do: Navy Pier Millennium Park - Ice Skating Top of the Sears Tower Garfield Park Conservatory (indoor botanical gardens) Visit Chinatown: Great place to shop, eat, and take pics! (the Chinese new year parade is coming up on Sunday, Feb 1st) ART: Museum of Contemporary Art Art Institute 21 and older: -Lucky Strike Bowling - Lounge (21-30 yr old crowd) -Howl at the Moon- Piano Bar (21-60 yr old crowd; people of all ages sing along); Its a lot of fun. Best Places to Eat: -Get GARRETS POPCORN... its amazing!!!! Get the caramel/cheese mix (sounds gross; tastes delicious) -Best Pizza that no one's heard about: Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder Co. (its a little bit north of the loop; it was one of Rachel Rays favorites) (get the Mediterranean bread, and the Pizza Pot Pie) -Eat up the stairs at the Italian Village (oldest Italian restaurant in Chicago) Carriage Rides are North Michigan Avenue; right by Ghiardelli Chocolate. there are horses just sitting around waiting for people. I have taken a ride with my boyfriend, and we were asked if we wanted a city or a lake tour. I suggest choosing the city tour at this time of year. After your ride go to Ghiardelli Chocolate for some hot cocoa or Argo Tea (only in Chicago), there are some throughout the city and one just down the street from Ghiardelli. Hope you enjoy your visit. I wish you beautiful weather!

If you're looking for a place like Market St. Station---you'll probably want to head for Navy Pier. This is mile long pier full of entertainment, restaurants, shops, a giant ferris wheel and stunning views of the city. There are even free trolleys that can take you there. Also--much of the time there can be spent indoors so you'll stay warm!

For carriage rides, go to the water tower at the north end of Michigan Ave. It will be pretty in the snow.

I LOVE Chicago! We try to go there a couple of times a year. There are always Carriage Rides lined up in the evening, look near the water tower area on Michigan Ave. On our last trip, we did a food tour, which was awesome. We had been to Chicago plenty of times before but never saw it from this perspective. We got to see a lot of small restaurants, delis, chocolate makers, pizza places, etc (and taste food from each place). It is a walking tour, so be prepared to be outside a lot. The website if you are interested is http://www.chicagofoodplanet.com/. I highly recommend it! My favorite museum is the Museum of Science and Industry. It isn't in the museum circle with the other three, but it is easily accessible by bus (just ask at your hotel, they'll tell you which bus to take). Go down to Millenium Park and take pictures of yourself in the "Chicago Bean". Another place to visit is Navy Pier. There usually isn't a lot going on there in the winter, but it's a great view of the city. Very very cold though with the wind off of the water - bundle up! Restaurants that we enjoy... The Corner Bakery is a great place to grab a quick breakfast. Another great breakfast place (sit down) is the Oak Tree in the 900 North Michigan shopping place. Dinner at Texas de Brazil is awesome (bring your appetite!). Ask to sit where you are able to see the wine room - there is an acrobat in there who retrieves the wine and performs, it's entertaining. We also like Grand Lux cafe (right on Michigan Ave at Ohio) - it is owned by the Cheesecake Factory - the decor is similar, food is somewhat similar as well. We also really liked Wildfire. You have to eat a deep dish Chicago pizza while you're there! We personally love Giordanno's. Everyone has a different opinion though. There is a pizza place on the food tour that I liked better than Giordanno's, but I can't remember the name of it! Hope you have a great time!
