Moving to Warm Weather?

Moving to Chicago-Need advice on how to deal with weather PLEASE HELP!?

  • This fall I am moving to Illinois to attend Northwestern University just outside of Chicago. I was born and raised in California and I am a typical SoCal girl, but now I'm off on a new adventure and I am really excited. However I am nervous about the brutal weather and wind! I have no experience buying the right clothes or even how to deal with the weather. Absolutely any advice is welcome! I would really appreciate insight on where to buy good winter clothes on a student budget, I don't want to break the bank! Thank you so much!!!

  • Answer:

Spend the money on a good winter coat. don't buy one that just goes to your waist. Trust me you want your butt and hips covered. Try LL Bean. One below is only $90. buy winter boots that are for warmth and waterproof, not looks. remember you will be walking everywhere. Hat, scarf, gloves are a must. and it just isn't the winter. spring is so wet. you will need waterproof shoes for walking around campus. My kids carry an umbrella with them and a waterproof jacket. FYI-don't wait till winter sets in to buy boots. You will be hard to find a good selection/sizes by then. I had a coat shipped from LLBean to my daughter's dorm.

First, it's probably not as brutal as you've heard. Minnesota, for example, is much worse. Second, the previous advice you received is good. Third, when in Chicago, if you look outside in December or January or February, and you see bright sunshine and blue skies, it's probably really cold outside (like 32F or lower). Bottom line, you have to watch/listen to the weather reports in Chicago. Unlike Southern California, our weather is constantly changing. P.S. I was on a cruise in Southern Cal in early November 2008, and the weather was nasty! Cold, rainy, etc. I could've stayed in Chicago, and gotten the same thing!

Berago

We have people from all over the world here - if people from India can handle it, you can! Things are sold by seasons here, right now you will only find sandles and summer clothes for sale. The lower price stores are TJ Maxx and Marshall's and even Target. There are resale shops, you will be able to figure it out once you get here. The other girls at school will show you around. You will need a jacket to start, then heavier coats and boots, and sweaters.

Dress in layers. Long silk underwear might be a good idea as the first layer. Buy a warm coat, wear a hat [you lose a lot of heat from your head if it's not covered], get some boots and gloves. You can buy all that in Chicago, say at a Marshall's. You might also want to do some research to find good second-hand/consignment shops for women's clothing.

You will want to check out the typical weather in Chicago. This site has excellent maps of climate. You can customize by month, location, and climate variable. http://climatemaps.co.cc

Alex

you can buy them at stores such as macy's & Dillard's.
