Easiest/Cheapest way to get from Chicago to Milwaukee or Southern Wisconsin?
-
I'm moving to the area and need to get acquainted with the transit system because I have family in southern wisconsin and milwaukee. What bus routes/trains/etc. are the best? Any travel deals insiders know about? I'd prefer not to pay nearly 30$ each way on amtrak every time.

Answer:
From Chicago, there are cheap routes to Milwaukee and Kenosha. Megabus goes to Milwaukee. They go to downtown Milwaukee from Union Station. If you know in advance when you want to go, you can get tickets for as cheap as $1 each way, though the cheapest I saw to Milwaukee was $2. They have schedules out to about 7 weeks in the future, so you don't have to buy that far in advance to get the good deals, but they have only a few seats on each bus that are that cheap; then the prices start creeping up. But the max fare isn't more than $20 each way. Anywhere it goes, it's the cheapest way to get there when you get one of their deep discount tickets. http://www.megabus.com/us/ For Kenosha, you can take Metra's Union Pacific North Line to downtown Kenosha. It leaves from the Ogilvie Transportation Center at Madison & Canal, and it costs $6.40 each way. If you'll do five round trips during a year, you can buy a ten-ride ticket for $54.40 and save nearly $1 off each trip. Or better yet, if you travel there on Saturday and come back on Sunday, you can buy a weekend pass for $5 for the entire trip! http://metrarail.com/Sched/cnw_n/cnwn.shtml

If you're visiting people south of Milwaukee or Madison, Metra (the area commuter railroad) is most likely the best option. On weekends Metra offers unlimited rides for just $5. The only line that actually goes into Wisconsin runs from downtown up to Kenosha. There area also stations on several lines that are in Illinois, but just south of the Wisconsin border. Very likely you can get someone to pick you up at those stations. Service varies a lot on weekends, but generally runs at a minimum every two hours. The ride is slow (figure 2 - 2.5 hours to the end of the line), but the price is right on weekends. On weekdays Amtrak really is your best option. There are assorted deals that will get the price down to the $40 range for a round-trip between Chicago and Milwaukee. Buses (pretty much exclusively Greyhound) are almost always more expensive and no faster. You can sometimes save money by going from Milwaukee to Chicago via Madison and Rockford, but that's not likely to be all that cheap either. Your other option is likely to look into ride-sharing.

Amtrak< I believe is only $40 round trip. Save 10% if you have a AAA card. The cheapest is always driving up 94. There are 2 tolls unless you turn off at US 41 near skokie and you reenter near kenosha.

The Metra train goes from downtown Chicago to southern wis. there are people who actually live in the Lake Geneva area of Wis that work full time in downtown chicago - they take the metra. go to www.metrarail.com for schedule and fare info. Welcome to Chicago! It is a great town.

You also have the option of the Metra commuter rail that goes up to Kenosha, WI. You didn't mention where in Southern WI your relatives live but if they are in Kenosha County, there is a good bus system that even has service out into the county (although the county service is week days only).
