I decided to do the same thing, I moved from a very small town in New Mexico, and moved to Chicago, since I was going to a college right in the city it made it much easier to get and stay connected. I actually loved it so much I decided to stay after college. I built friendships with those I was in college with and their families, Chicago is a very friendly big city, and it was nice to feel so welcomed in this amazing city. Things you can do to help you as you make your decision, visit Chicago, take your family or a close friend and spend some time at the colleges and visiting the city, this will help you, and when you have extended weekends in college if you want to visit home it's not that long of a flight, we used to fly places all the time, since Chicago is such a central city the trip wasn't long. If your looking to study art, such as photography this is an amazing city for that. Check out Columbia College, its an excellent college in the city which has a fantastic program for this. Wishing you all the best in college. :) There is so much do to in the city, take a look at the links below,

You won't be alone; college will put you through an orientation, and you're going to meet a ton of students your age who are in a similar situation (from a small town or far away and new to a big city or new to Chicago). You'll get to explore the city and college life with your new friends and have their help in solving any problems you might have. Living in Chicago as a newcomer is so much easier now than it used to be, too. You can look up city services online, figure out the bus system online, and find a ton of free and student friendly events online. Living away from home is part of growing up, and there are few places that are better to do that in other than Chicago.

Definitely! I live about 30 minutes away from the city, and I go downtown all the time! If you haven't already, you should come up here with family or friends first to make sure you're comfortable with it, especially if you've never been here. The city isn't for everyone, and it's a huge culture shock coming from a small town in Texas to Chicago. It's pretty easy to get around, and you can take cabs, the train, the L, and a GPS on your phone helps a ton too! Good Luck! :)

as for what drip said about the getting around thing, Chicago is very bike friendly and public transportation is not needed. the other two answers are perfect

I wouldn't do it. I have two kids going to school out of state, in two different states. It is a huge pain in the neck to get them home for school breaks. and costly. some colleges in big cities would require you to take public transportation around the campus and dorms. If you are really interested in going to a school in chicago, then come for a visit. Meet with admissions, take a tour of the campus, see a dorm, ask about security on campus. You need to check out schools good for photography. I don't think Loyola or University of Chicago are known for this.
