Where are the best jazz clubs to go to in Chicago?

Any hidden Chicago jazz clubs?

  • I'm going to be in Chicago for Labor Day weekend, and since that's also Jazz Fest weekend, I'm anticipating huge crowds at all the better-known jazz clubs. I've been trying to google some low-key, hidden jazz clubs, but it's difficult because they're hidden. Does anyone know of some places that out-of-towners might not know about? I'd prefer if it's close to the train line and in a somewhat safe area, but I also realize that some of the best places don't fit into that category, so any suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

    The Jazz Festival, in my opinion, is just not as popular as other fests (BluesFest for example). I don't think the better-known jazz clubs are going to have much larger crowds than usual. I would go to a better known club, enjoy the music, tip the bartender generously and then say that you really like the place but what are some less well known clubs he can recommend. Or, ask the patrons or musicians.
