Where is the best Campgrounds in southern Illinois?

Campgrounds Wisconsin/Illinois?

Im going to a concert to Alpine Valley music teather and looking for campgrounds around the area, after the gig im planning to make a trip in Illinois/Wisconsin and really don´t know the area (im mexican & never been there) any recomendations.. I´ll appreciate any additional info!..

Chain O Lakes State Park near Fox Lake My favorite, Apple River Canyon out towards Galena Starved Rock Mathieson State Park (near Starved Rock) For more info do a search for the Illinois DNR (Department Of Natural Resources) website. Lots more stuff in Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan. It just depends how far you want to drive.

The first poster is correct. I would say Chain O Lakes. It is in Illinois not too far south of Alpine.

= If you're camping in state parks, please note one huge difference between the parks in Illinois (and Missouri) and those in Wisconsin. Wisconsin charges a fee for entering its state parks, which keeps a lot of the riff-raff out. I've heard from friends who have been in southern Illinois or Missouri when the Meth heads decided to show up and party in the campgrounds. Not fun. The Wisconsin DNR is way more strict, and your odds of running into random psychos while camping are pretty slim. I lived and camped there for 20 years.
