Is Chicago the most similar city to New York city in the US?

Minneapolis, Chicago, OR New york City?

  • So i've been to both chicago and new york city but I havent been to minneapolis. I'm 16 Junior in highschool and i'm looking for colleges, I would really love to live in a city. All my life i've lived in a small town in wisconsin and just want to escape into the city life. I love the whole aspect of the city. I've always wanted to live in new york but it seems alittle costly but I think I could still manage. Can you tell me the difference between the 3 cities are? What are the living conditions, expenses, city life? Basically summarize which city you would live in and why. Which one is the best to live in with easy transportation, etc.

  • Answer:

Minneapolis is not in a league with NYC or Chicago, so if you need the really big city only NYC or Chicago will work for you. I'd need to rule out downtown/midtown in Manhattan on the cost of apartment rentals. Just heard about one bedroom apartments for rent in New York City for $3000.00 per month and one room apartments for $2000.00 a month. Better check into this if you are planning to move there, the high rent might just be a deal breaker unless you have deep pockets. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/16/realestate/rents-in-manhattan-rebound-to-record-highs.html

lived in chicago and it was nice but id perfer new york because it has good colleges and its bigger.

Well all of them are very populated, Minneapolis being the least and New York City the most. But if you like people then go to New York, however it is expensive. Minneapolis is the least expensive, Chicago is OK. If you want to see the scenery and the buildings go to Chicago or New York. All of the cities experience high amounts of snowfall, so if you want the least amount of snowfall, Chicago is the place. If you like lakes, then go to Chicago. :P New York is pretty much packed with people 24/7, if you want a quieter scene, go to Minneapolis. However, Minneapolis is prone to tornadoes and has the most severe weather. Good Luck! :)

I've lived all over the twin cities. Mostly south suburbs. The best area in Minnesota rural area in my experience is South Minneapolis for appearances, St. Paul for actual homey type.. its not super clean from my experience but yeah.. I'm from Lakeville Minnesota.. minneapolis isn't really that large from what I';ve seen of it and u get comfortable real quick. I've never really made friends in the city but I am used to this.

Chicago actually has more snow than NYC. And hotter, more humid summers. But on average they are similar. It's just the extremes that Chicago bites you in the *** with. Minneapolis is obviously worse in the winter. Chicago is easily cheaper than NYC but NYC has more entertainment and the arts (but Chicago has far more than the average person would ever need). Minneapolis I'm not as familiar with but it's not AS big city. NYC has NYU, Columbia, etc and Chicago has University of Chicago, Northwestern. (These are all top-tier). Chicago also has UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) which is more of a normal public state school (less selective than University of Chicago at Champaign-Urbana which is the main one), Loyola (Catholic affiliated), and both cities have A LOT of colleges.
