How far is Chicago from Philadelphia?

Should I move to Philadelphia or Chicago?

  • So I maybe relocating to Philadelphia or Chicago from Baltimore and just wanted some honest input on the city. I am 26, my boyfriend is 30 and we love city life. I am a writer and actor, so I wanted to be close to NYC without having to struggle to live in NYC. Just able to go to hang out or for auditions and stuff. I also that Chicago has an amazing theatre scene. There are two problems with Chicago: 1. My boyfriend hates it because he said the people are horrible and it's absolutely too cold (he's from Cleveland and he is trying to get away from EXTREMELY cold weather). 2. It's not like the east coast where I have easy access to other cities such as NYC, DC and Baltimore. I love the east coast for that reason. In Chicago, I would be landlocked. On the east coast I can get to other cities within 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours. I also LOVE rapid transit systems. I know Philly has SEPTA (MFL line, BSS line and PATCO) and Chicago has the "L". I have heard that the "L" is much better. I also know that Philly is much cheaper to live in than Chicago. I am very torn between these two cities and I need some helpful info on arts/theatre scene, nightlife, food, crime rates and rapid transit. Please only answer if you have helpful information about one or both of the cities that will help me make my decision. Thank you.

    The people in Chicago are no different than people in most other big cities. It does not have as many snooty, over-educated people like Boston does. It is less rude than NYC. Chicago winters are marginally colder than Philadelphia's winters. The cost of living is a tiny bit higher in Chicago, because housing is more expensive. Obviously, you can get to NYC, DC, and Baltimore faster from Philadelphia. Chicago is closer to St. Louis, Milwaukee, and other cities in the midwest. Duh. The arts, eats, and theater scene in Chicago is slightly better than in Philadelphia. The Chicago Transit Authority (plus two other bodies) operates a world-class bus and L-subway system. Despite the new mayor, Chicago is still very politically corrupt. But, the city is well maintained and very clean. There are only a handful of jobs in the theater business. Most pay a pittance, even if you get a job. Your call.

I live in Chicago and love it but I want to move! I was considering moving to Philly for the same thing you list...it's so close to so many awesome cities. Chicago is the most beautiful city I've ever been to...it is the best city in the US, but once you leave the city it's just suburban wasteland followed by endless cornfields. The city is in the middle of NOWHERE! Sure Milwaukee is close by, but um......it's Milwaukee!!!! Not that big a deal! I also love public transportation and just being able to walk or take public transportation anywhere, and let me tell you...the L really can take you anywhere in the city! There's no need for a car. The nightlife is amazing here. There's lots of culture and different theaters. Lots of arts and museums. If you live in Chicago there really is somewhere to go 24/7. It's true the weather sucks, but Philly is not THAT MUCH warmer in the winter. If I were you I would move to Chicago since u already live in Baltimore. Move somewhere far away....it's an adventure!!!!!

I have nothing much to add to the other person whom answered your question as he is on the money, however, The closer to other cities were brought up by 2 people I know that moved here from Philly, but they have been here for 34 years! Also, I might add that Philly has a higher crime rate than Chicago. I do not think the weather is any consolation because we may be a tad colder, winters are around the same.
