Where to live in Chicago?

Where should I live in Chicago?

  • I'm moving to Chicago in August as part of Teach for America and I'm panicking a bit about living arrangements. Here are my criteria: -Safe -Ease of parking -Reasonable driving commute to the south of Chicago (where I'll probably end up teaching) -Fairly quiet -Relatively inexpensive (ideal would be a 1 or 2 bedroom in the 700-800 range) With such a wide variety of neighborhoods and areas in Chicago, the choices are a bit intimidating. I know that some people want to be surrounded by "cultural attractions" or "artsy neighbors," but my needs are a bit more basic - safe, cheap and accommodating to having a car. I'm also planning to live alone, because I've gotten used to this as a grad student. Any advice at all would be appreciated!

  • Answer:

Oak Park area hosts a few major streets and very close to expressway to get you to work. It's safe, in your range and parking isn't bad. Berwyn area is a little less expensive and a bit south of Oak Park. Good Luck!!!

i live in the midway/clearing part of chicago witch actually is the south side it is defiantly the nicest neighborhood on the south side with most residents being City workers such as cops and fireman the price range on house varies from block to block but there is lots of variety and getting to downtown Chicago's loop is rite down the block at midway airport i would definitely recommend living in the midway area

I love Chicago more than London or New York.

Your commute to south Chicago is pretty easy - fast to 95th street, 15 minutes or so - then from tere, it depends, but an easy commute on expressways (94) South Holland is nice, lots of apartments, small houses, shopping, stores, wide streets, parks, nice http://www.city-data.com/housing/houses-South-Holland-Illinois.html Median price asked for vacant for-sale houses in 2000: $99,400 Median rent asked for vacant for-rent units in 2000: $541 Median gross rent in South Holland, IL in 2000: $637 Housing units in South Holland with a mortgage: 4,634 (511 second mortgage, 415 home equity loan, 34 both second mortgage and home equity loan) Houses without a mortgage: 2,155 Otherwise, you might have to go west out to Hillside or south as far as Bolingbrook for those prices.

You are not going to find a 2 bedroom with parking in that price range. http://www.apartments.com/Results.aspx?page=results&state=il&helicon=0&rgn1=1&area1=y&area2=y&prvpg=5&Rent_Minimum=0&Rent_Maximum=99999&am1=0 Some of these are too far north but it will give you an idea of what's out there. I think you could find something on the near north side that will be close enough to commute but give you things to do in the evenings. The south loop has become pretty pricey but you might be able to find something if you make a concession on space.
