What is the weather like in Chicago in February?
-
I am considering taking a trip to Chicago next year in February 2009 in early February and I would like to know what the weather is like in early February in Chicago and does it snow often in February in Chicago?

Answer:
Honestly? Crappy! :-) More definitively: Chicago has a very changeable climate. February is usually quite cold with a mix of sunny days, snow, sleet and rain. It can be sunny one minute and very cloudy and gray the next. We have a saying here in Illinois: "If you don't like the weather, just wait 5 minutes and it will change." It is pretty accurate. As to whether you will experience snow and how much in February of 2009, it is impossible to tell. This February you certainly would have experienced snow. This year we also had a much snowier winter than in recent years. Odds are you will get to see at least some flurries while you are here in February 2009. I would guess that you will get to see more than flurries but that is all it is, a guess. Regardless of the snow, make sure to bring a warm coat, hat and gloves as, snow or not, it will be quite cold. In the FYI department: While Chicago can be quite windy (especially along the lake front), rumor has it the name "Windy City" does not refer to weather conditions. Chicago may actually be known as the Windy City because of its politics. The politicians from Chicago developed the reputation for being so long winded and passionate (and full of hot air) that this is the reason Chicago was nicknamed the Windy City. This is the most common/popular explanation which dates to 1185. However, another school of thought believes that the nickname Windy City dates to 1876 to an article in a local newspaper that refers to Chicago as the "City of Wind" which clearly references the breezes off of the lake. You decide which you like best.

Chicago has a very changeable climate. February is usually very cold( 0 to -25F frequently) with a mix of sunny days, snow and sometimes sleet. Some winters, it is quite breezy which is why Chicago is known as the Great Lakes city that will make your bones shiver. It can be sunny one minute, then breezy and bleak the next. We have a saying here in Chicago, just as they do in NE: "If you don't like the weather, just wait 5 minutes and it will change." It is pretty accurate. It gets really cold, especially in the early part of February. It frequently snows in February, as well as in December and January. Sometimes it snows a couple feet; sometimes only a dusting. This February there was a lot of snow. This year we also much more snow than recently. Odds are you will get to see at least some snow flurries if you come in a February. A decent prediction would a lot more blustery weather but it is only a good conjecture; we cannot be sure. Make sure to have things to do in case you get stranded ][transpotation doesn't move when it gest blustery} pack long johns, a warm coat, hat and gloves as, snow or not, it will be very cold and usually breezy, if not downright windy and bone chilling This is my American friend told me Hope this can help you Zoe

Cold as a witche's .... elbow. Why would you consider taking a trip to Chicago in FEBRUARY??? That's like going to Sudan in the summer. if you're into snow and cold, great, come on down. But I'd wait for the summer months (June, July) when the weather is great and things are swinging and there are plenty of OUTSIDE activites going on. The city's at it's best then.

well it's usually still cold. it starts getting a bit warmer in march/april. but this yr. its been strange. (global warming!!!)we didn't start getting nice weather until late this month. so next yr's winter might last even longer. i would just be prepared to bring a heavy coat and boots. :)

It is very cold in February ... and they don't call it the windy city for nothing. It snows when it snows ... February is a good month for snow

It's sunny and very comfortable - usually averaging around 75 -80 degrees! LOL! I've lived here all my life and so wished I could say that!! Pack your hat and gloves and warmest coat and a pair of boots...and prepare for the snow in the Windy City. If you could postpone it till May you should be fine! Even March and April can be if-fy. But hey- crazier things have happened - we have had a 75 degree day here in Feb., but it's a true rarity! Enjoy!
what's up?
Snow, ice, wet, cold.... If you can plan go a different month, but not January either.
