  I think the responses so far summarize a singular truth: Both cities are fabulous, albeit in different ways. As you note, New York is the city that never sleeps. It's also home to more world-class performing arts troupes and venues than any other place on earth. It is the fashion and financial capital of the universe. It's also, unfortunately, very, very, expensive. Chicago is in many ways more "approachable" than New York: It has a bewildering array of things to do, and most are available at a fraction of the cost of their New York City analogs. The energy level is quite high in the Windy City; but it doesn't go on all night. The parks and the Lake in Chicago are beautiful, and unlike anything else in the U.S. . . .but the winters make New York look like a tropical paradise. I have a friend who's a life-long New Yorker who recently said this to me: "If I were banished from New York forever, the ONLY other city I could live in is Chicago." What's the take-home message?
