Chicago Weather--Do I need snow boots?
-
Later this week, I'm going to Chicago for a student conference. Does anyone in the area know if there's currently a significant amount of snowfall on the ground? I've looked up the projected weather for when I'm going to be there, and it's not supposed to snow, so I'm wondering whether or not I need to pack snow boots for snow that's already on the ground. I'm going to be walking around the general vicinity of my hotel for meals everyday, and possibly some longer walks for Sears Tower, etc. Thanks!

It's been a light winter for snow. Cold might be more your concern. Nevertheless, while you don't currently need snow boots, you should have boots with traction. Consider wearing those but bringing a pair of "inside" shoes that you can change into. Dress in layers. Bring a scarf, and some long johns. And don't be afraid to wear a hat or at the very least some ear muffs. You lose more body heat through your head and even if you have "hat head," well, I guess you have to draw the line somewhere. You don't say where you're from, so I'd say the essentials are: hat or ear muffs, scarf, long johns, boots with traction and, oh, very, very important -- Blistex. You will be very happy you brought THAT. Sounds like you're going to be downtown: check out Exchequer Pub. Stay away from Bennigan's on Michigan / Adams. Do check out -- if you want a diner experience, Lou Mitchell's near Old St. Pat's Church. If you want something closer and inexpensive, Petro's (on Randolph & LaSalle, across from the old Bismarck theatre) is a really comfortable restaurant. Greek Town on Halsted is another good place to go. My favorite is Rodity's but there's lots more to choose from.

Just take warm clothes and comfy shoes to walk in. Boots won't be needed. Gloves, stocking cap, scarf, long johns, ear muffs, and a stop at a local coffee shop, you will need. ;)

the snow on the ground is melted...but i just checked the weather and it shows chances of snow all week. that doesn't mean snow boots weather either, could just be flurries daily. i suggest to ask again the day before you are leaving. and if you bring some sturdy shoes, lug soles, you should be fine. http://weather.wgntv.com/US/IL/Chicago.html?main=1

Not today. Even when it snowed a couple weeks ago, it was not to the point you'd need snow boots. I wouldn't worry about packing them. Save your luggage space for comfortable walking shoes.
Most of the snow that was in the floor has already melted, there's still a little bit but not enough to need snow boots.

good question.

No, you probably don't need snow boots but it will be COLD and sometimes slippery, so I would pack or wear some regular boot-type shoes that are comfortable and not slippery. Sidewalks get cleaned off promptly, but salt is usually put down which will ruin whatever you wear, and is unpleasant to walk on.

It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Bring the boots. If it doesn't snow, big deal. At least you were prepared. The weather is unpredictible.

There's currently no snow on the sidewalks or streets of Chicago, though there is a forecast for snow tonight, maybe two inches. Chicago's not in line for any significant snowfall for the next couple of weeks. Don't worry about the boots. As far as the Sears.. the L is a pretty good option (think two block walk rather than two mile walk, asuming you'rer in the Mag Mile, River North, or Streeterville areas).
