Best things to do in Chicago?

What are the best things to do in downtown Chicago, near magnificent mile?

  • What are the most popular attractions and things to do in Chicago, Illinois, specifically near the "Magnificent Mile" (but please share for anywhere in the downtown area)? We are planning on visiting in Spring, probably between St. Patrick's Day and Memorial Day (date will depend on what is going on in the city, so feel free to suggest something even if its outside of that range). I've heard of many events that go on annually in Chicago (i.e. Dying the river green, Music festivals, Millennium Park, etc), but I want to know what people think what is the best event and/or place to visit in Chicago... Also, let me know where they are located and if there are any good hotels nearby (mid-range hotels) and eateries. Thank you much!

You're right about annual events. The calendar has a few each month. The St Patrick's Parade has had 2 versions for many years but the South side edition was canceled a few years ago but may reappear...see below: http://www.chicagotraveler.com/st-patricks-day-parade Navy Pier is a few blocks east of Michigan Ave. A free trolley takes a loop but not every day until Summer. There are scheduled events and other seasonal attractions as well as Ferris wheel rides, cruises and fireworks displays. Millenium Park has seasonal events. Now free ice skating is going on. Outdoor sculptures, fountains, gardens, Cloud Gate and musical programs attract millions. There are over 50 museums, conservatories, nature centers and zoos that are open always, especially on foul weather days. The Bulls and Blackhawks are about midway in their season while the Cubs and White Sox will start playing to make the playoffs in April. Catch a game or games while you're here: http://www.nba.com/bulls/tickets/ http://blackhawks.nhl.com/ http://blackhawks.nhl.com/ http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=cws#y=2012&m=3&calendar=DEFAULT There are concerts, plays, and other live entertainment going on every day. The following site may be helpful: http://www.chicagotraveler.com/concerts.htm As for tall buildings, Chicago invented the skyscraper and has 4 of the country's tallest in its skyline. If you like heights spend a couple hours on the Willis Tower for thrills and on the top of the John Hancock building for a slightly better view (on tyhe Mag Mile). Me personally love doing the bus, walking and boat tours. or going to the State Street Macy's as I enjoy the Tiffany domes and atrium's there. I like going to the two observatory's we have at the Willis and Hancock towers. Navy Pier of course or even just taking an El or Subway ride as I love trains. Or walking along the Lake and River. There is also the Museum Campus and not far from downtown is Lincoln Park Zoo
