Is Macys becoming the next Wal-Mart? They have horrible customer service and treat their employees like rats.?
-
Since November I have worked at a Macys store in Southern California. At first I worked as a cashier in housewares. Since January they put me in the fine china crysatal department. As a male they require me to wear dress slacks, dress shoes a long sleeve shirt and a tie. For all this they pay me only $8.50 per hour. I worked at Whole Foods two years ago and they payed me $10 per hour to bag groceries. At Whole Foods I could wear jeans, t-shirts and sneakers. Macys doens't give me or other employees raises. They give me lousy shirts like 3 hour evening shifts. Macys refuses to give me or other employees requested time off for doctors appointments. When I help customers with fine china or crystal Macys only orders dsiplay models for the store. Most china crystal items have to be special ordered and can only be shipped to a residence or office address. Customers can't pcik up speacial orders. These orders usually take 1 month to get.

Answer:
I am so sorry. I have a very close relative who works at that New York store, as I call it. She began working there when it was a Marshall Field's. The stories she tells about the way this New York store's management treats its employees truly is disgusting and horrible, as you note. She keeps thinking they might fire her (because she had been on track to retire with benefits), but she continues to work there because she needs it to make ends meet. It's such a shame. Marshall Field's was a store that implied uniquely Chicagoan quality and sophistication. When I was a little girl, my grandmother always used to say she was going to buy me my china set from Field's when I get married. ;) With this New York store, I see tackiness everywhere. The employees are overworked or underqualified. The merchandise is not of the same caliber as that which Field's offered, and it poorly presented inside the stores. Customer service has gone downhill, big time. And I know from my relative that they treat their employees like crap. Don't even get me started on how upset I get at seeing that the New York store occupies the former flagship Field's store building on State Street in downtown Chicago. It's a gorgeous building, except now, that NY store has its name emblazoned everywhere and does a dreadful job with decorating its interior. It diminishes the beauty of that historic, architecturally significant building. It's a very bad way to run a business. You have my empathy.
