What is there to do in Chicago?

Do you know what I like about living in Chicago, people?

• It's a happening place; that much is true. What I like mostly about is that Chicago is very humble. It's a world class city like New York and Los Angeles, but unlike them, they don't think they're the center of the universe or have this "holier than thou" mindset. The fact that it's cheaper to live here than the other two, and the elitist attitude or lack thereof is why I'm glad AmeriCorps sent me to Chicago. There's a lot of affluence here like the other places obviously; otherwise, it wouldn't be a global city. I moved here from Austin, Texas, five weeks ago, yet I'm fitting in well here. I don't feel like an outsider here because of that Midwestern hospitality and because it's not all about social status and material things like New York and L.A. Chicago is a real city with real people. Anything you can find in the other places, you can find here as well. Here's why I think Chicago is so humble for an Alpha City. First of all, it's in the Midwest, and that's part of the culture. Mostly, New York's economy is centered around Wall Street and all the banking industries. L.A. is focused around Hollywood and all the entertainment business. Chicago on the other hand was built on transportation, manufacturing, and retail. Generally speaking, I suspect folks in those industries have better people skills than stockbrokers and movie stars. I know for a fact, you need good people skills to work in transportation and retail. Plus, Chicago has a more blue collar background which means it has a larger working class. Northwestern University is an upper echelon college like Columbia and USC, but it's very humble as well. The bottom line is, the locals here don't go around tooting their horns about how fabulous it is when I already know that. They don't take credit for everything either though cultural diffusion has started here as well. Humility is a rare yet priceless commodity.
