Tent camping cape cod (state park)?
-
My girlfriend and I are looking to do some camping on cape cod or the vineyard this summer, but all the campgrounds we've been finding on the internet look expensive and require reservations far in advance. Are there any campgrounds on cape cod or the vineyard, preferably on or near the beach, that are inexpensive and/or don't require reservations months ahead of time? How about state parks? Thanks.

Nickerson State Park offers camping http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/southeast/nick.htm You do need reservations, but it is inexpensive http://www.mass.gov/dcr/recreate/camping.htm from the website Reserve A Campsite Advanced reservations are available for 28 state forests and park campgrounds. To make a reservation: o call toll-free 1-877-I-CAMP-MA or 1-877-422-6762 o from outside the U.S. and Canada, call 518-884-4959 (long distance charges apply) o TTY customers call 1-877-620-0833 o place your reservation online through ReserveAmerica.com Reservations may be made as early as six months prior to the date of arrival, and as late as one day prior to arrival. Nickerson State Park -Brewster Don't know about reservations, you should probably call ahead. Connects to the rail trail and is a short bike ride to the beach.

You can also camp on Grape, Bumpkin, and Lovell's Islands in the Boston Harbor. (I know it's nowhere near the Cape, but it's a cool experience.) http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/metroboston/harbor.htm

Nickerson State Park in Brewster. It's not truly near a beach - perhaps 30 minute drive away. There are some lakes in the park. I don't believe you can reserve a site at Nickersons. During the peak summer period, campers may have to camp in the parking lot waiting for a site. Not far away is Sweetwater Forest. It's a private campground, and you would require reservations. It's very clean. Both Nickerson's and Sweetwater Forest are in hardwood forests and are comfortable in even the hottest summer weather.. There are some campgrounds that are out in the open. They would be very hot in the summer.
