Does anyone know of any good Esthetician schools in the RI, MA, CT area?

Best place for New Year's Eve events in New England?

  • Anyone know of any great "family-friendly" New Year's Eve events (the youngest person traveling with me is 16 so no 18 or 21+ places) in the New England area (MA, NH, VT, ME, CT, or RI), preferably something at a hotel or theatre?

  • Answer:

Providence's first night celebration, Bright Night, stands out from many of the others. Many activities are held indoors (no freezing!), but there are also outdoor activities, too. It's family friendly. The schedule of events will be announced in early December, but you can view last year's schedule to get a feel for the event. See: http://www.brightnight.org/schedule.html

MA has First Night Boston 2008 where there are events all over the city. You will probably find out more info within the next month and a half. There are several events going on and many of them are family friendly. Some at hotels, others at the Hynes Convention Center. Buttons are about 15 per person and allow anyone with them to access any and all events going on. You can pick them up at various merchants before First Night. Usually some convenience stores, book stores, and supermarkets. Or you can grab them in various areas around the city. (Example: Last year I decided last minute to go. So I grabbed one from a booth set up on the corner of the Boston Common on Boylston & Arlington St.) For updates, keep an eye on: http://www.firstnight.org/FirstNight2008/Events/Default.aspx

Issues

First night is by far the best thing to do in Boston on New years, and it's cheap compared to other events. some advice: 1. you don't have to stay in an expensive downtown hotel. Since the MBTA (subway and trains) are free that night, you can stay outside and just take them into and around the city. 2. PLAN your night using the website. The best events fill up quickly, so you want to get here in advance, and since they are spread around the city you may have travel time. 3. Get familiar with the subway. otherwise you'll spend the night deciphering the train maps. You can find maps on MBTA.com 4. dress warmly. it can be very cold, though there are lots of places to go inside. 5. keep an eye out for bathrooms. many of the T stations don't have them. 6. don't forget the fireworks at midnight. it's a great way to cap off the night. When we get closer to the holiday, ask here where the best place is to view them (you can get there on the subway, but you'll be riding with lots of inebriated people). 7. Make time to view the ice sculptures on Boston Common. Lots of people just go to the shows, but the sculptures are fantastic. or if you are staying in town you can always see them the next day. have fun.

Boston's First Night is a huge event. So many things happening for people of all ages. But watch the weather. The last few years have been relatively warm, but it can be 20 degrees or less.

In Hartford, CT there's a first night celebration all over the city with fun things to do and see, like musical performances and comedians, and they have fireworks at around seven I think for the younger kids and at midnight.
