What area of Boston would be good for a single mother and high school aged teenager?
-
Okay so I'm doing this for my mom, as she's computer-challenged haha.. I'm 16 and currently my mom and I are living in Illinois. My father left about a year ago, and there's really nothing keeping either of us around here, so before my Junior year of high school starts, my mom was considering moving to Boston. She's been there on vacation a couple times, but doesn't have much idea of how to go about finding a neighborhood, school for me, etc. So any thoughts on this? Where do you start? I realize that to make it there before the school year begins may seem a little unreasonable, but there's just a lot of things that I won't even go into on here. I'm just looking for advice, please.

Answer:
Well, first of all you should consider it Boston/Cambridge and not just Boston. The two cities, both unique and prosperous, stare at each other across the Charles River. Second, does your mother wish to live in the city or in a suburb? Boston/Cambridge is the most European-like urban area in the USA but it still is far from being Paris or London. The city school systems have the usual problems of American city school systems but there are exam schools for higher-performing students. And the suburban school systems like suburban schools in most of the USA, have higher average performing students than the inner city.

Boston is a terrific city, but has a weak public school system. Boston Latin is one notable exception. At 16, education should be one of your top priorities. That means that you would be better off in a suburb of Boston rather than in the city itself. One way to evaluate schools is to look at results on the state standardized MCAS tests. Test results should not be the only criteria, but they give you a pretty good idea. The downside is that the better the school system, the more expensive it is to live there.

Well, Quincy Massachusetts 02169 would be wonderful. Next year, there would be a new high school called Quincy High School. it is completely new and also people who go there next year will be the first students to go. Quincy is a great neighborhood city since it is across from Boston, Braintree, and Dorchester. Quincy is also famous for the birthplace of John Adams( 2nd President) and his son (6th president) and also John Hancock. Quincy is also a great neighborhood because it has a community pool at Lincoln Elementary School. Also Quincy has many cool activities such as Karate, Eating, and also historical sighting

Punk Rock and Minerals
the city is a great place to live in boston with the T (buses) being a great help to getting across the city. the only problem with you coming when your sixteen is the public schools here, unless your mom is planning on sending you to a private school then your education will be hurt sevearly. the exam schools in boston, you need to pass a test to get into and can only enter in 7th and 9th grade Do NOT go to the public schools in boston, move to the suburbs and go to their public schools, right outside of boston, Dedham, Westwood Norwood or Quincy. If you still want to move to the city West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain are the best towns inside boston to move to. goodluck i live in the city and go to public schools so if you need any advice email me.
