What's student life at Boston University like?

Whats Boston University really like?

  • I'm a 21 year old student a community college in N. California and I'm trying to decide what University to transfer to. I was thinking UC Berkeley for a long time but it seems that once you get past the name there's a lot left to be desired. All I ever hear about Boston is how everyone loves it and would move there in a heartbeat. From what I know I think I'd really like it but being so far away I can't exactly pop over for a tour and a personal inspection. So, if anyone could tell me about the university and maybe the town itself, I'd appreciate it. Bit about me, I'm hardworking and I don't party too much but I love cool easygoing fun people. I might be majoring in Philosophy and than go into law, I may do nothing close to that. I do have a pretty big interest in art though, so a good art community would be a plus. Thanks!!!

Easy-going isn't a word I would ascribe to BU. It's intense. Everyone I've met is a double or triple major and very involved in activities. Very hard-working to the point of obsession. I think they are all building their resumes for grad school. BU is a very urban campus. It's spread out for two miles along Comm Ave, but is only a few blocks wide at any point. One side is the Charles River, the other is parts of the Fenway neighborhood of oston (where I live) and an expensive part of Brookline. BU has an amazing FitRec center (gym). Boston itself is full of college students. There are 6 or so colleges within a mile of BU. MIT is across the river, Northeastern is a few blocks away. 25% of the population of Boston is college-aged. That means tons of activities, cheap food, cheap bars, music venues, theater, art schools/museums/galleries, etc. Winters are wicked cold as we say. Spring and Fall make up for the winters.
