I have a question about Provincetown Cape Cod?
-
I'm thinking of booking a week long vacation this summer to Provincetown, Cape Cod. I have been looking on Home away.com And have found a few however, one of the rentals described provincetown as this: "Provincetown is a particular draw for gay and lesbians" from around the world but everyone can enjoy this small town that features shopping, dining, theatre and nightlife in a beautiful physical setting. The summers are mild because of the cool Atlantic Ocean. Herring Cove Beach is consistently ranked as one of the top ten beaches in the US. This vacation is geared towards kids... Im not sure how I feel about this statement? is it true that provincetown a particular draw for gay and lesbians? Cause if so then I will have to pick a different place to go. Idea's?

Answer:
I have a story for you about P-town you might find funny. I brought my two children there for the first time when they were about 10 & 11 years old. I had warned them during the drive there that they might see some gays or lesbians so they wouldn't be shocked if they did see people of the same sex holding hands. So I pull into the parking lot in P-town, open the car doors, and we all exit. The FIRST thing we all see is two lesbians walking a couple of feet away from us with their lips locked together. Even though I had warned my children they were still shocked, Lol. If you go there you will DEFINITELY see stuff like that everywhere. My favorite places on Cape Cod are the Falmouth and Chatham areas. Even better is Oak Bluffs or Edgartown on the island of Martha's Vineyard.

gay people and lesbians will be no threat to your kids. The gay presence in P-town is very strong, but like I said earlier, your kids will be fine. But then again, your homophobia will not be tolerated in P-town, so you may want to go somewhere else

P-Town (provincetown) IS the mecca for gay and lesbians but that does not mean it isn't kid friendly--everyone gets along great and it's not like the locals are doing anything bad, btw, just because a place is gay friendly doesnt mean you cant bring kids there stick the kids on the beach and they'll see harbor seals swimming by all day--they'll love it...then take them on a whale watch--it's amazing...if you have a 4X4 vehicle you can go off-roading on the beaches, explore the lighthouses, take a deep sea fishing trip P-Town is amazing , I've been going there for years (and no I'm not gay)....trust me your kids would love cape cod WAY more than disneyland WOW at the people below me--you make it sound like they film gay porn there...i NEVER saw 2 lesbians locking lips in the streets or maybe it happened but I just dont pay attention to it or notice it---nothing is a big deal until you make it a big deal---you dont think your precious little kids arent going to be exposed to homosexuality in school?? or in the movies?? or when they watch internet porn?? you didnt think of that did you people

Provincetomw is THE place on the east coast for gay and lesbian folks to vacation. The purpose of that statement is to make you aware of that fact so that if it is something that could offend you, you can plan to go elsewhere. Frankly, my assessment is that P'Town is that there is not a lot to hold kid's attention for much more time than a day. The entertainment and activities are really oriented toward young adults. Yes, there are beachs, but you can only do so much beach tie before you have to find something else to do. And in P'Town, the alternatives are shopping and nightlife. The nightlife has a distinct adult flavor, and even the shopping can be a bit risque if you come from a conservative background. My suggestion is to find some other destination on the Cape for the Family, and make P'Town a day trip. Eastham/Orleans might be ideal because of the proximity to the National Seashore Visitor's Center (much larger than the Visitor's Center in P'Town and with a much more extensive program of activities), and the ability to get to Brewster, Chatham and even Hyannis (for a rainy-day movie) if necessary.

Yes, Provincetown is largely gay and lesbian, both in year-round residents and tourists. They don't do anything that I haven't seen straight people do everywhere else. If you can't deal with it, go somewhere else.

Are you afraid that you children will catch "gay"? Provincetown is a beautiful seaside town with something for everyone. That includes gay people. To avoid any chance of coming near gay people this summer, book your vacation to the Middle East. There are still gay people, but they are very quiet about it.

Unless your kids have lived an EXTREMELY sheltered life -- no TV, no internet, no newspapers or news magazines, and maybe not even CHURCH, yadda, yadda -- they probably know a LOT more about homosexuality than you'd care to know from the sound of your question. Yes, P-Town is a mecca for the gay community. Has been for nearly a century now. Since well before San Francisco became one on the West Coast, to be honest. It's not like people are fornicating in the street for crying out loud! (Keep them out of Amsterdam if you wish to avoid that.) Even if your kids are clueless about gays, just roll with it. If they ask, just explain it in an age-appropriate way. "Some folks are like that," or "They love each other," is usually enough to assuage a 5-year-old's curiosity. The reality is that gays are everywhere, from P-Town to Boston to New York to Joplin, Missouri. (And Joplin is gaining a rep in the gay community as the "San Francisco of the Midwest.") The ONLY way that you'll shield them completely is to just say at home, turn off the TV, and pull the shades. If you cut P-Town from your itinerary just because your kids might see two people of the same gender holding hands or (horrors!) kissing, you're doing yourself and your kids a major disservice. P-Town is a wonderful, tolerant, artsy, and FUN place for the whole family. Leave your homophobia at home and you'll ALL have a GREAT time!

Provincetown is a hangout for gays & lesbians. I would book a vacation in another town on the cape and just visit p-town for 1 day. We took our boys on a 1 day visit when they were about 4 & 6. There are men holding hands and occasionally kissing, walking around. It's not debauchery, but you need to decide what you want to expose your kids to.

Province Town, or "P-Town" is the number one homosexual town on the East Coast. There are only three 'straight' bars in all of P-Town: 1. The Governor Bradford; 2. The Veteran's Club; and 3. the fisherman's bar across from the Governor Bradford. All the other dozens and dozens of bars and coffee shops and hotels and Bed & Breakfast's are 100% active homosexual. The heavy leather homosexual S & M crowd come out at night. Lesbians and their girlfriends/wives are everywhere (and they have an attitude). No nudity laws have recently been enacted since homosexual men & women like to walk around nude on the beaches. So yes P-town is extremely homosexual in every way, shape, and form.

Provincetown has a free and hedonistic atmosphere. It is a gay mecca, but others enjoy it as well. You are likely to see flamboyant drag queens walking down the street advertising their show, might see guys with a leash and chained nipple rings, etc. You will almost definitely see public displays of affection with gay and lesbian couples. It sounds like I'm criticizing it and I am not. I love it and the vast majority of people there are not over-the-top. But if running into any of the above with your kids would offend you, then it's not a good choice. Try another area on the cape. Or consider Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket.
