New winter coat.. warm and waterproof?

I need a waterproof winter coat for boston winter ASAP!?

  • I go to school near boston and I need a jacket that will keep me warm walking to class. I need it to have a hood and be waterproof and most importantly warm. This is my first winter in boston so I'm not totally sure what to expect.

You don't really want it to be waterproof. Waterproof coats don't breathe at all and make you sweat like crazy. It's like being in a turkey roasting bag. What you want is water resistant. A few good places to look: Burlington Coat Factory will have the best selection, with decent prices. Marshalls and TJ Maxx will have a smaller selection, but you may find a real steal. There are multiple locations for all of these stores in the Boston areas. Major department stores will also have winter coats and they may be having pretty good clearance sales. Have you made any friends in Boston who are from Boston or other cold areas? Ask them if they'll help you shop. They know what to look for. Get something that is stuffed with down or other warm fibers. It will look poofy. It shouldn't be too tight, so you can layer a thick sweater or hoodie underneath. Some jackets have hoods that attach with a zipper. this is great because you can remove the hood when you don't want it, and when you want to wear a hat. Hoods are kind of a pain when walking. they block your peripheral vision, and when you turn your head to look to the side, the hood doesn't turn with it! You can barely see and it really messes up your hair.

This has been an unusually warm winter. It usually goes a few degrees below freezing for weeks at a time. I'd suggest you shop for winter coats at LL Bean, Land's End, or REI. I believe there is an LL Bean in Dedham and the Wrentham Outlets. Land's End can be found online or in Sears. Burlington Coat Factory in Fall River is also a good choice. Be sure to keep a hat and gloves in the pockets. Keep a shovel and ice scarper in your car. If you take the T get some ice/snow traction cleats and some boots.
