What's the best place for a weekend getaway within a 6 hour driving radius from Boston, MA?
-
The girlfriend and I are looking to getaway for the weekend of July 18th-20th. We want to go somewhere new and exciting (we've both been to the Cape and New York City before), but it has to be within a 6 hour driving radius of Boston, MA. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

Answer:
Depends on your kind of vacation. You can get to Montreal in 6 hours. The Berkshires are nice, or upstate NY. Lake Willoughby in northern Vermont is gorgeous - cleanest water I've ever been in. Portland, ME is a fun town, or York Beach.

i second the vote for montreal--feels like you're actually in europe and really just a few hours away maine is definitely a good choice--depending on what you like to do you can sit on a beach, any outdoor activity*rafting, kayaking, hiking) or party in portland

OhmyGod, I cannot believe that only capricor has the answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BELIEVE HIM!!! But make sure that on your way you meander slowly on the back roads of Vermont, and spend an afternoon at least in Burlington (dining suggestion: "Taste of Burlington" on the lakefront. A horrible trite name but a great but unpretentious restaurant). The Eastern Townships area to the southeast of Montréal in Quebec also wonderful for exploring, and, believe it or not, there are some wineries there (centered on the town of Dunham); also some lovely inns and B&Bs; you can stay at one and drive to Montréal to taste the city (trying to do Montréal in a weekend is like trying to do all of N.Y.C. in a weekend!!)

Mystic, CT Lake Winnipesauke, NH Wells, Maine *Maine is beautiful Campden, Maine There are nice resorts and b&b's in Vermont. You could go horseback riding. There are places in upstate NY to visit. Philadelphia, PA is almost 6 hours from Boston. There is a lot to do there. There looks like there is a nice resort in Woodstock, VT with a lot to do in the area that is close by. I found it by googling, romantic weekend getaways in New England. I almost booked a weekend trip there but they want to charge my credit card in advance (2+ months) and I'm not ok with that.

I would definitely go to NH. It all depends on what you like to do. If it's nature then NH is the best. I know of a great campground in Webster if you want. Just drop me an email - they also rent campers. I am a huge fan of Laconia, Webster, Concord, and White Lake Region. You always have Maine or Rhode Island too. All I really know in Maine is Old Orchard Beach or the Sacco River, but I had a blast at both places. I live in Rhode Island and you could always hit Newport (VERY EXPENSIVE) or the Narragansett/Point Judith area. Point Judith has the option of jumping on the ferry to Block Island. Which I heard is also very expensive. But what isn't now. Hope you two have a great vacation no matter where you end up.

It definitely depends on what you're into...culture, country, outdoors, etc. Several suggestions have been good ones. Montreal - good for someone looking for the "European" experience. If you like trying to find your way in foreign locales, this is a beautiful city. I stayed in an awesome place in Montreal. http://www.loftjacquescartier.com/Home.aspx We saved a lot of money staying here over a hotel, and I enjoyed it so much more! Burlington, VT - still in the city, but significantly less foreign! :D Amazing restaurants, plenty to see and do. Don't miss Penny Cluse Cafe. Yum! Northeast Kingdom, VT - If you really like to take it to the backroads and explore the New England countryside, this is the place to do it. I've got a few fantastic routes mapped out if you're interested. I tend to prefer the quiet side of a vacation. Hiking, swimming, etc. More than enough of that up there. Lake Willoughby was suggested and that's a part of this corner of VT. It's an amazing glacier lake flanked by two mountains. The town of Burke is a nice place to stay...especially any of the places on Darling Hill Road! If you like camping, Belview Campground is a great spot in Barton, VT on Crystal Lake. It's closer to the highway and a short drive from Lake Willoughby and Burke. Essex, Clinton, Madison, Old Saybrook, CT - If you like the beach/ocean experience, these are nice areas along the Sound.

Atlantic City is always a good time and is about 6 hours away. Lake George NY is only 4 hours and it is beautiful, there is a lot to do in both places. Lake George is fairly cheap too.
