    i agree with C Anemone about locations and traffic. I disagree with her on apartment locators. They get paid by the apartment so they often try and convince you to move into the place with the highest commission (even if it isnt what you want) and wont even show you places that don't offer a commission. The best way to find what you are looking for is through an apartment locator. There is no cost to you - the apartments pay them a finders fee. Just do a search for "apartment locators Austin, TX" and you will find lots to choose from. They can help you find properties in the area you want to live in and that have the price and amenities you want. Austin is by and large and very safe city, so there are plenty of places to rent that are considered safe. Ideally, you'll want to live close to school or work because traffic can be pretty terrible at times. Two of the areas you should probably avoid would be 1) the area around N Lamar and Rundberg and 2) East Riverside. Both will have tons of cheap apartments, but they are probably the least desirable areas to live.
