A good place to live outside of Raleigh,NC?

Where is a good place to live outside of Atlanta, GA?

  • My husband was offered a job in Atlanta and we are looking to live in the suburbs of Atl (up to an hour outside of the city.) We are not from the south and have NO idea what we're in for. Somebody please help!

  • Answer:

Once you're settled here, your husband may not relish an hour's drive to town. The traffic is bad in Atlanta, and sometimes I think the infrastructure can't support all the out-of-towners who have moved here! (That includes me. I'm originally from NY.) Does your husband's company offer relocation services? Your best bet is to drive around before deciding on an area, to see what feels like the best "fit." If great schools are a priority, consider Roswell, Alpharetta or East Cobb. These are upper middle class family-oriented areas with a lot of amenities. If you want to be close to Atlanta, but not in town, I'm a fan of Smyrna. (Great location and an active downtown area -- but you'll compromise on schools.) If you want culture, nightlife and enjoy an urban feel, I really like Atlanta-proper. There are some beautiful high rise and loft buildings. Good luck -- and welcome! You'll initially miss home, but you'll end up liking it here.

It depends on how much you can afford, if you have children etc. If you have children, I would recommend Cobb County or Gwinnett County. Which consist the cities of Marietta and Lawrenceville. You can also try Northern Fulton County in Sandy Springs or Buckhead. The east isnt bad either In Dekalb County and Rockdale County which consist of the cities Lithonia, Conyers, parts of decatur( Outside 285). In Lithonia, they have the new Stonecrest mall and it is really nice area. Stay out of Southern Fulton County and Clayton County, those are the bad areas. Also parts of the westend are bad as well. Wherever you move keep in mind that Georgia has a valorem tax. When you go get plates and get your car registered, they have this tax. It goes by the type of car you have and what county you live in. The closer to Fulton County you live, the higher the tax. Example, my grandmother lives in Dekalb County, which is the next county over from Fulton County. For her Lexus she paid $600 in tax, that wasnt including the $50 or $100 for her registration. For my Trailblazer, I was looking at $200-$300 in tax on top of the registration. I would recommend moving to Dekalb County or Northern Fulton County first followed by Gwinnett and Cobb County. The later 2 counties are a little further out and keep in mind rush hour traffic. It will take about an 1 1/2 hour to get to work. So the closer you are, the better. The last time I drove from Ohio to Atlanta, I left Ohio at midnight, got to Fulton County border at 7:30am. I didnt get to Dekalb county to my grandmother's house until 8:55am. Which during non rush hour takes about 30-45 mins. At most. I like the state of Georgia. Atlanta is up and coming. I cant wait to move back.

Southern hospitality is NOT a myth, but you have to encounter true southerner's to receive that hospitality. Check into Alpharetta, Roswell, Cumming, Canton, Ballground, some cities north of the city of Atlanta.

brace yourself... southern hospitality is a myth, and you're taking your life in your hands driving in the metro ATL area. They all think they are the next Dale Earnhardt. Good luck, Signed, an Ohioan, in SC.
