Moving to Atlanta, GA...need advice...Hi...Im moving to Atl from Chicago and need advice on a place to live.?

I need to be within driving distance from the airport. I was looking at the new homes being built in College Park..right off of Rt 314/W Fayetteville Rd. Is this a very bad place to live? I realize College Park is not the best. Im looking for a home not more than $250,000. I looked at Fayette County and did not like its "country like" community. I enjoy the city...lots of people, sidewalks, etc. Im not interested in a condo..only new homes in a subdivision. Thx

Answer:
That part of Atlanta is very segregated. If you fit in it can be a great place to live, if you don't I can't imagine that you would feel safe, or welcomed in any area that you might be a minority in. It is an inconvienient truth about Atlanta, some areas are really white and some are really black and some are really asian and some are latin. I don't think you would be in danger, but I don't knowthat you would be comfortable either.

Try north of atlanta in marietta, kennesaw, smyrna, duluth, dunwoody or sandy springs. You could find some condos for $250 in the city but they would be small.

You are in a sticky price situation where you will probably end up having to make a concession of some sort. In order to stay within your price range for a brand new house you will either have to choose an iffy (is that even a word) neighborhood like College Park and hope for revitalization or take that "country" feel you don't particularly like. I know that is not much help, but is is metro Atlanta reality. (Remember that what is considered metro Atlanta has stretched almost to the Alabama and Tennessee borders. ITP got really expensive or really dangerous about a decade ago.)

I agree with the gentleman above. If you are working at the airport do not live in north Atlanta. I live in Dunwoody. I woulc never consider commuting to South Atlanta. College is nice in many places. There are some bad areas, but there are good areas too. Atlanta does have a noticable racial divide. If you choose not to be a part of this then you will fit in just fine. I love Atlanta and the diversity it offers. It makes it special. In South Atlanta there are some places that are not good. Such as the West End. It offers very affordable housing, but the areas could be bad. I think College Park is nice. Especially if you work at the Airport. You can also look at Jonesboro. It is Clayton County (which part of the airport is too). It is very afordable. Downtown Atlanta is very expensive, but the gentlman suggested about, the area around the Underground and Capital is very nice. They are doing a lot to restore that area. You can still move in quite reasonably. Being from out of town and making a big move as you are. I suggest working with a realtor. All of us from Atlanta can tell you our views on our wonderful city, but each will differ and we don't know your tastes. 250,000 can buy a lot in Atlanta. Depending on your area it can also buy you nothing. Welcome to Atlanta. I know you will love it. It is a fabulous city. Good luck with your move!

Why would someone recommend "marietta, kennesaw, smyrna, duluth, dunwoody or sandy springs" to a person who said she'll be working at the airport? That makes no sense. All those areas will cause you to have at least a 60-minute commute, each way (unless you work at non-peak hours). Keep in mind that new construction ITP is going to run you at least $325k. The builders are putting up nice new "craftsman style" homes in an attempt to blend into old neighborhoods. What about somewhere south on I-85 toward Peachtree City? Unfortunately you would have to live in a rural-type community that you say you don't want. I agree with the other person who said you're going to have to make some compromises. $250k is at the very low end for desirable housing in the urban areas, unless you buy an older place that needs a lot of TLC. I live in a condo 2 miles southeast of the state Capitol where the 1BR/1.5 units go for about $160-175k. I know you don't want to live in a condo, but something like that may be a short-term solution if you want to look at, say, a 3-5 year timeline before buying something nicer/bigger. Good luck with your search!
