What are the 3 bus yards in the MARTA system?

How safe is Atlanta's mass transit system, MARTA?

  • I'm 95% sure that I'm going to Auburn, and I was thrilled to discover that Atlanta's less than a 2 hour drive away from Auburn... especially after going to the aquarium... heeee :3 But as Mother and I almost died several times trying to weave through cars going 70 miles an hour and only 10 feet apart, I decided that I didn't want to drive in Atlanta. Ever. She pointed out that I could probably drive most of the way to Atlanta, then find a place to park - say, by the airport - and take the metro or a bus in to Atlanta to go see concerts or go shopping or whatever. So how safe is MARTA? Would I feel secure taking it at 2 in the morning after a concert's gotten out? Is it affordable, accessible, easy to use? I know absolutely nothing about it.

  • Answer:

As another respondent said, MARTA is not a 24 hour operation. As a former New Yorker, I'm an advocate of public transporation. Though most people wouldn't advise single women to take the subway alone late at night, my friends and I have done it many times -- in NY -- and never had a problem. (Know that I wouldn't allow my daughter to do the same!!) With that said, one has to be smart: -- if traveling at night, stay in a crowded car, particularly the same one as the conductor -- travel with other people -- don't make eye contact with anyone or present yourself as a prospective "victim." Appear confident! -- leave flashy jewelry at home. Be mindful of your purse. -- don't get off at a deserted station. If you sense someone may be following you, find a police officer and/or hop on a train. I don't blame you for not wanting to drive in Atlanta. I'm not real comfortable with city driving, either. If you ever do come into town at night, you may want to spring for a motel, and pick up your car the next morning. Good luck!

I thought Marta was great, and I was a lot more comfortable with it than the trains in Chicago (DIE!!!) or in D.C. A lot cleaner, easy to follow. Then again I never did it alone as a young girl, in which case I'd probably feel scared on ANY public transportation, especially at night. You'll get used to the driving. You don't have to do all the weaving with the others, just hang out at 65mph in the right lane.

You're clearly not from a metropolitan area. If this is true, the MARTA is going to be a huge culture shock for you. If you go on YouTube and search MARTA, some of the top results are of people being violently harassed and abused. I would absolutely not take the MARTA at 2 AM. It is certainly an inexpensive, accessible method of transportation, but at what cost otherwise? Many people may not appreciate the honest description of public transportation, but I invite everyone to see how colorful and unsafe the experience can be.

The trains run til 1:30 ish am, so you can't ride at 2am. There pretty safe, of course youtube isn't going to have dull train rides uploaded, just the action. I love Marta. I'm a 20 year old single mom with a one year old. it's the only way I travel, I grew up with my mom and I riding Marta if it wasn't safe my baby and I would not be on the train. I've travelled all hours of late and early to stations all in the perimeter. I talk to people when I make eye contact, most people are friendly, at worst they'll ignore you (oh no! haha) There's a button and usually other people will help you out if you're getting harassed, Which again, is rare. Just stand up for yourself if you need to, and avoid people if you need to. It's safe, quick, it's not like you gotta dodge bullets and rapists in every corner. any violent issues have usually been between people that know each other and settled it stupidly on out train system. You'll be Iiight.. ;)
