Where can I travel with a temporary passport?

Where all can you travel without having a passport?

  • Me and some friends are wanting to go on vacation this summer... I know you can go to Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Canada without a passport, but is there anywhere else? Also, I heard something like, by Summer of '08, they're gonna require you to have a passport to travel to those places, but the exact date that that will be enforced has yet to be released. I think I read that on WikiAnswers or something. Does anyone know if that's true? Also, is Puerto Rico a nice place to go? That's where we were wanting to go.

  • Answer:

Puerto Rico is US territory and you don't need a passport to travel there from the US mainland. Same with the US Virgin Islands. It is correct you can still travel by sea or ground (not by air) to Mexico, Canada, and a few other places without a passport until the end of this year. However, doing so would also mean you could not fly back if there was a problem. The other answers are correct and you should just get a passport. US citizens apply for a passport at the post office. This website explains the passport application procedure: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html Good luck!

Easy! Go to US Dept of State website. Follow the links. Also check out the Customs and Border Protection website and look for the Western Hemispheres Travel Initiative. The DOS website benchmarks US travel policy for any/all up-to-date entry/exit documentation requirements. The CBP website focuses on the America's and is a great reference point for any traveler. Research these two sites, plan ahead and give attention to the warnings. Tip - Just prior to your trip, print the most current requirements, read them thouroughly for changes and take them with you. If there is an interpretation problem, you will have the paperwork to assist in clarification. You can also call for clarificaation via the numbers on the website. Do your homework and remember that advice is OK from outside sources, but you are responsible for the correct documentation. It's not the most enjoyable place to be when the plane is leaving without you because a travel agent friend made mistakes on your homework assignment. Best of travels...
