Is a costly summer service/adventure trip worth it?

I've been wanting to go on a high school international summer service adventure trip and have looked into many organizations. My favorite is a trip through Global Works to Costa Rica for 3 or 4 weeks. The problem is that it is a bit expensive (about 5k). If my mom would agree to let me go at all in the first place, despite the expense, I'm sure I would have to pay for part of it and might not be able to have enough money during the school year for recreation and things like that. If I got a job, I suppose most of my money would go towards it. I want to know if you think it is worth it to save all this money for a month-long hopefully trip of a lifetime? It would be great if anyone has been on such a trip. P.s.- I'm looking into next summer (2010) and I would be ending Jr. year and 16 years old. Thanks!
