Can Americans go to North Korea?

  • I really want to vacation in North Korea, but I'm an American. Can I go to North Korea? I also don't want to go on some bullshit tour with a North Korean guide who follows me around all day and takes me to designated areas, I want to explore the country myself. I want to see what North Korea and Kim Jong Il and the Dear Leader have to offer. If I get into the country safely/undetected can I move about freely or will I be discovered and killed? Or perhaps I will be imprisoned? If I am imprisoned will the American Embassy try and grant me amnesty? I have a feeling I may be imprisoned...also what currency do they use in North Korea and what is the exchange rate? I will need to exchange my American dollars into their currency so that I have plenty of bribing money I think.

    You cant go to North Korea without a tour. If you really want to see North Korea this is your only reasonable option. If you did manage to get into NK without a visa (this is really hard and would involve the help of other's) it is almost impossible to get out of NK without getting caught. Many North Koreans try it and very very few ever make it. If you get caught you will be considered a American Spy and the chances of the American government even bothering to help you are small unless you have good connections. I suggest to you to take the tour it will still be fascinating.

The company linked below says they do individual tours. I would not try and sneak into North Korea unless your idea of fun is to spend a long time in a very unpleasant prison, and quite possibly be shot. Unless you are an ethnic Korean and speak fluent Korean, the very idea of moving around NK without being caught is ridiculous.
