How to change your name in a passport?

How do you change your last name on your passport ?

  • My daughter and her fiance would like to go to the Bahamas for their honeymoon. They will be married in august and would like to leave on their honeymoon right after they are married. The brochure for the resort they have chosen says they will need passports to enter the bahamas. Since they currently have different last names would my daughter have to change her name on her passport before she goes? Or will she have to apply for a new passport with her new last name? Thanks

  • Answer:

There should be no problem with her going with the passport she has now. It' still all accuate and it's a valid government issused ID and it's not outdated.

She needs to WAIT to change her name on the passport until after the honeymoon. The name on the passport, on the AIRLINE TICKETS, and on her other I.D.s must match...so she must make the airline reservations in her maiden name. She can change everything when she gets back. she actually CANNOT change the last name without the marraige certificate..so she has to wait. See site below for info on changing name on passport ...for AFTER the honeymoon.

A lot of women never change their last name after marriage. They don't even use a hyphenated name. Legally, it is not necessary to change the name. It's more of a cultural thing. It is only a minor problem when you file taxes jointly with different last names. But even that is easily cleared up with the tax board. So the name change can wait indefinitely, unless your daughter just can't wait to take her husband's name. My advice is don't do anything until back from the honeymoon.

I had a name change on my passport, since the passport was still valid for a couple of years, all they did was add an "Ammendment" clarifying that there had been an court ordered name change. Thats why the front page of the pp (where the pic is) has a small line saying see page __ for ammendments.. By the way, they did this at an embassy overseas, maybe since they are still in america it might be a different process, but nowadyas having an ammendment added is prob much cheaper and faster then getting a new passport all toghether...oh and i did this about 4 years ago so laws could have changed... Good luck!

She will eventually have to get a new passport, but she would be fine for the honeymoon with her current one (unless she has changed her name on other documents already). Here's how to get a new one with a new name: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/correcting/correcting_2654.html

bring id, passport and marraige license.

Im ok now

no a trip and their last name has nothing to do. she will sign papers if she has to separarely and thats it. since she wont have time to change her last name after the wedding.. good luck to her

I see no reason why she need to change the name now as long as all other documents are still matching with the Passport no need. She can have the name changed after the marriage as will be required there after.

As far as changing it before the trip, no. The name on her passport must match her legal name, and that won't change until she changes her social security card.
