Answer:
Well, the Freie Universität Institutes are mainly in Dahlem (a part of the district named Steglitz-Zehlendorf). The appartments and flats there are normally relatively expensive and rare. An option is to move to a student dormitory/appartment house, but often you have to share the bathroom with other people which is annoying: http://www.studentenwerk-berlin.de/en/wohnen/index.html The district is also a bit outside of the town center, so if you wanna take part in real Berlin life you should move into a district from where getting to the Freie University doesn't take that long: Wilmersdorf, Schöneberg and Kreuzberg. The first one is mainly a nice, wealthier district with not so many students, rather a mixture of older people and families. Bars and clubs are a bit more expensive there and nightlife is not so diverse. Schöneberg is a very diverse district with some ugly parts and some of the nicest places of Berlin, very heterogenous groußs of inhabitants, immigrants, gay community and aged alternative families and people. Nice shops, cafes and bars. Kreuzberg is very cool, but also one of the poorest districts of Berlin and the one with the most immigrants. Because of this facts, there are some social problems there, but it's also one of the most exciting parts of Berlin: Cool nightlife, crazy shops, many alternative people, cheap but good food. Anyway: Don't just go after districts! They are huge and like smaller cities on their own and have their ugly and great parts! Be sure to move close to either the U1, U3 or U7, because then you'll have to change just once (except the U3 of course, this one leads direct to Free University)
