Mini Vacations Destinations in Your Area.?

• We're heading out from our summer home in Alaska to the lower 48 for the winter again this year and looking for more ideas from you on your personal favorite mini vacations in the area where you live. We will be traveling on a complete whim and making destination decisions on the fly from the information we receive both here and from our website. We'll be traveling from late August through early May 2012. What would you consider to be your first choices on things to see during a mini vacation around where you live? We are typically in an area for 2 to 3 days max. will be driving a 4x4 truck and staying in motels, lodges and rental cabins this year. We don't mind getting off the beaten paths and onto the country roads, we love the less commercialized areas, not crazy about large tours and really despise tourist traps. If you have the weekend off and wanted to stay in your local area, where would you spend your days and why?

  In Colorado, there are a lot of good choices - the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Rocky Mountain National Park, Durango/Mesa Verde, Ouray, and the Great Sand Dunes are among my favorite places.
