I'll be traveling to switzerland and I know nothing about the internet when abroad (from the US)?
-
As the question states, I'll be going abroad and I don't know much about how the internet runs in foreign countries. I had a friend to go Britain a few months ago and he couldn't reach .com sites. I know in Switzerland, the .com becomes a .ch, but is there a way around this? Any help/suggestions/past experiences would be great. Thanks

Answer:
No idea why your friend in the UK couldn't connect to .com sites. I never had that problem and have visited the UK several times over the past few years. Have also visited many other countries in Europe, the Middle East and the Caribbeann lately. Internet cafes are more common in Europe than in the US - just ask aroundwhereverr you are in Switzerland. Like in the US, there are more & more businesses especiallyy coffee shops) that offer wireless Internet - but you need your own laptop. Hotels in Europe typically offer in-room Internet for a fee, though some offer free wirless in the lobby. The only problem I have envountered is that keyboards are sometimes a bit different in Europe. For example, the Y may be located where the Z is on American keyboards. That has become less common. Take a laptop if you have one. All laptops now accept any voltage (verify by checking the power supply) so all you need is a plug adapter to use a USA laptop in Europe. Best is to get a combination adapter/surge protector. This is an example and I got mine at BestBuy: http://studenttravel.about.com/od/techtoys/gr/electricadapter.htm

At sites like myspace or Facebook you might get redirected to the switzerland side but that should be fine when loging in. And no there is no problem whatsoever going on .com sites. You can also log to .ch sides from the USA. That only means where the server of the side stands. The only problem you might run into is Pandora.com if you are using that one. International laws forbid the use of music outside the USA. Also some sides from Germany are blocked or the server blocked some sides but that only should be concerning child pornography. As a normal user you can use any side you want. I you want to use any of your equipment in Switzerland do not forget to get an adapter for your plug or you will be screwed.

No idea why .com sites didn't work for your friend! As said, things you might bump into are sites opting automatically for domestic language versions, some media sites unavailable outside the United States and a bit funny keyboards with weird extra letters. But these are only minor annoyances I believe. Net speed may wary, depending on the country in question and the area inside that country - net speed usually drops significantly in more rural areas, but metropolitan and urban areas should be OK. I can only speak for the Finland situation here - there aren't that many old-school 56k modems or ISDN in use anymore. ADSL, WLAN and increasingly mobile 3G/HDSPA broadband cellular networks are increasing day by day.
