Road Trip destination in Southern California?

I live in Los Angeles.My birthday is next month and i want to take a little road trip with a few friends but i dont know whats a good route or place to drive to, i wouldnt want to go anywhere too far, like San Francisco. Im looking to take a break from the city and see some amazing nature sights.
