Atlantic Travel - England to USA via merchant ship?

Is it still possible to book onto a merchant ship that travels from the UK directly to the USA, preferably from the south coast of the UK to the New York area? I'm not interested in a 'cruise' type booking, moreso a cheap ticket in a cabin with a bed on some kind of containership, et al. Best answer wins 10 points :)
