Where is a good place to go in the United States for a Victorian themed vacation?

  • My mother has not been on a real vacation in way to many years. When I mentioned I would go anywhere she wanted to go she mentioned Vermont because there was a place that makes old-fashioned soaps and other items. She is really interested in the Victorian era and loves that architecture and is interested in antiques and the way of life during that period. She loves lace, frilly things and high team. She would really like to go to Europe but is scared of flying and terrorists (don't judge.. it just is who she is). Any U.S. ideas would be appreciated.

    Chester, Vermont would be good. There are lots of victorian houses on the main street. You could stay at the Fullerton or The Inn Victoria You can go to nearby Weston (or Rockingham) to the Vermont Country Store. They have lots of retro soaps, tonics, etc. There's the Grafton Village Cheese Company over the hill where you can see them making great cheese.

Savannah, Georgia! Your mom really shouldn't be afraid of flying internationally. Especially if it's western europe. Flying is safer than ever.

Cape May, New Jersey is a cute little Victorian town. You can take a tour of town in a carriage and see houses turned into museums. Cold Spring Village has ~20 houses, all restored to the Victorian era. The area has great afternoon tea places as well. http://www.capemaymac.org/index.html http://www.capemay.com/ If you feel like a chance of pace, Atlantic City is less than an hour's drive away. And Cape May has a ferry to the beaches of Delaware, so you could possibly take a trip there as well. Have fun!!

Rugby, TN I'm sure you could find specifics online, but they have at least one festival a year for crafts and such. The have shops and a church. My mother found this place and I had to go (by force). It is a Victorian village made up of several shops and buildings. It has been several years, but what I remember was an Episcopal church, a gift shop, and a huge tent with crafts people (for the day) and food. It is in Fentress County, I think. If not, then it is the next county over. You'd have to fly into Knoxville and rent a car. It is about an hour or so northwest of Knoxville. The other alternative would be to fly into Nashville and rent a car. From Nashville it is about a 3 hour drive, but it is a nice drive. (You can get a free, official map from the state of TN website--state.tn.us.)

The Pennsylvania dutch area might me a nice idea. I went last summer and had a good time in Pennsylvania. You can go to Philadelphia's and see the revolutionary sites. I am not sue how Victorian it is but the whole North East is with in a short drive of the state so you can see many areas at a time. I am from California so most things are far apart for me so it was a nice change of pace back east. If not you can try going to The Carolinas or Georgia ect to see old Victorian houses and such. Have fun
