What good to do in Zurich?

If you could go to Brussels, Amsterdam, or Zurich from dec. 25th until Jan 1st, which one would you choose?

  • I found a good flight deal for each of these 3 cities - Brussels, Amsterdam, and Zurich and I do not know which one would be the best for those said dates - Christmas through new years. It would only be a 5 day trip so I don't know how much side travel that will allow us, so I want to pick the best city to maximize my time. I am 25, and my Husband is 29. Here is what I have considered so far: I think Amsterdam would be really fun, but I think for first time Europe travels it could be potentially overwhelming or scary on new years. Then again, it seems like one of those places to see when you are young, and I would really like to see the Ann frank House, the Art museums, and the architecture etc. . Option 2 - Brussels - would get to see again, some great art and architecture, have some great food (i hear) would be perhaps a little more laid back, but potentially boring for all 5 days. Would possibly allow us to get to paris (!!) but I have always thought Paris would deserve more time an attention then than a side trip would allow us, plus we would have to get back to brussels to fly home. options 3 Zurich - we could enjoy the Christmas festivities, have fondue, go to a smaller town stay and ski ( we have always wanted to ski) - cons - I don't know how far Zurich is from mountains, and in 5 days I don't know how much place to place travel in Switzerland would be appropriate. let me know what you think! Have you been to any of these places at this time? thank you!

  • Answer:

I've been to all of them around the Christmas period - any of them would be a good trip. I often fly through Amsterdam for New Years between visiting family in the US for Christmas and returning home because it's a convenient route - there are no direct flights available for me. If you choose either Brussels or Amsterdam, you can easily visit the other by train for a day or more. I'd choose Amsterdam - there are hundreds of museums, galleries and historical sites. Most of the time, it's pretty easy to get out and explore (unless the weather is especially bad, but in the winter that could happen in any of these). There are trains from either Brussels or Amsterdam to Paris if you choose to do that. Paris is worth more than a day, obviously, but you could get an overview of the city and go back later for an in depth visit.

I haven't been to Zurich yet, so I can't comment on that. But as you've already been to Brussels, my advice would be to fly to Amsterdam, and perhaps from there take the train for a day or two to Bruges if you want a romantic deamy holiday, or Antwerp for something more lively. But do return to Amsterdam to spend at least new years eve there. While personally, I am not too fond of Amsterdam myself, the Dutch really are crazy about fireworks, that it is a sight to behold. It's fireworks everywhere, all night long. If you do plan to stay in Brussels, there actually is a lot too keep you occupied for five days, but a lot of it is not always within the historical center and plenty is hidden from most tourist eyes. The other advantage is that Brussels in centrally located to everything else. Within 3 hours or less by train, you can be in Paris, London, Amsterdam... A good place to start for any of the main cities in Flanders would be these maps made by the locals: http://www.use-it.be
