Other answers

The "park" in "parkway" refers to a park or series of parks which the road goes through. A parkway provides a way to drive through a park or parks. It just so happens that "park" also means "stop your car for an extended period of time", which makes the word "parkway" sound ironic. A driveway is called a driveway because it provides a way to drive off and onto your property, and away from and towards your home. Both "parkway" and "driveway" are suitable names, in my opinion, but thanks for the laugh.

The same reason you go slow at rush hour and pay a toll on the freeway.
