What are some requirements to be a travel agent?

How do you become a travel agent?

  • So I have a master's degree in accounting and finance and have a full time job. I'm very interested in being a part time travel agent from home, for fun really. I love searching through deals, looking at reviews, pricing, etc., just love it. What are the requirements/education to become a travel agent? I've called a few universities in my area to see if I could take on line courses, but it seems like all that's offered are actualy degrees (BS or AS) in travel/tourism/hospitality....but I've also been told by those schools that I don't need a degree to get such a job...is that correct? What do I need to do to get into the industry? What are the requirements to get a such a job? I've called a few travel agencies but no one's called me back.....thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

You don't NEED an education to be a travel agent, though some companies require it before hiring you, but if you're looking to work on your own then you don't need to have any formal travel education. The best thing to do is link up with someone who is already in the industry and they can help answer your questions. Try http://www.myparadiseplanner.com/career-opportunities . I know they are looking for work-from-home agents both part and full time and the owner can help explain how it works.

Used to be on the job training, now it's a degree program. Keep trying. Suggest being a backup for a while.
