Quit my job and travel the world for a year and a half - good or bad idea?
-
So I was planning to work for several years, save up all my money and go travel for a year and a half. I wasn't planning on working, just traveling and having fun while seeing the world, eating different foods from different places, experiencing different cultures and countries, figuring out more about myself if that makes sense. I know it's gonna be HELLA expensive, but that's why I'm not going for about 5 years yet. Also, most of my traveling will be inclusive of accommodation, attractions and most meals etc because I'll be going on cruises (P&O and RCI) and tours (mostly Contiki) for the most part. I want to experience different things around the world, like seeing machu picchu, riding a vespa in italy, sailing in the whitsundays, riding an elephant in thailand and a camel in egypt, seeing the pyramids, doing an african safari, doing a visitors tour of harvard, snorkelling in the great barrier reef, standing on the top of the rock and the empire state building, being in times square on new years eve, seeing the walk of fame, zip-lining in alaska, seeing ferrari world, shark diving, paragliding in europe above the alps ... all these different things around the world i want to experience (these are all included in all the tours I'm doing). I'm just worried that when I come back and have to find a job my prospective employer will think I'm selfish and irresponsible in throwing my money away in that I haven't worked for a year and a half I've just been "having fun all around the world". What do you think? Is it a bad idea? I just thought it would be a cool thing to do I read about this family on the internet who had done it, they'd saved up for about 10 years and 4 of them went around the world for a year, not working just travelling around for a whole year.

Answer:
Sounds awesome! I hope to do the same thing but just a little sooner and in one spot. I plan on moving to Mexico in a year and 3 mos. and hope to save up enough to live there for at least a year with no worries. I plan to save up enough to take care of utilities, rent and food. If it doesn't work out after a year I'll drive back home which is in Texas and find me another job. If they ask me why I didn't work for a year I'll tell them that I spent a year learning a new language. :0) I figure being bilingual will be such a plus that they won't focus on me taking a year hiatus from working. Good luck to you and I hope you don't spend most of your life saving and saving that you don't end up doing what you set out to do. 10 years is a long time but worth it if you save enough to do what you want to do. It sounds like it is a good idea for you, it wouldn't be such a good idea for me. You are the only one who can make this decision. My only question would be if you have any income beside your job. If you can save enough money - even if it takes longer than 5 years - go for it. You will have additional expenses ( mortgage maybe or storage for your furniture, health insurance, etc. You will also need money to tie you over until you get a new job). Don;'t worry about what a prospective employer may or may not think five or ten years from now. You will have acquired not only new experiences but also new skills.
