Do you have the skills and knowledge to sail solo around the world?

Is 16 too young to sail around the world?

  • A local teen, Zac Sunderland, is going to set sail around the world very soon. Is 16 too young to voyage around the world, alone? I am sure he is going to be watched all over the place. And he has a radio phone, so he can summon help and what not. I think he is brave. http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-sp-outdoors26-2008may26,0,4839612,full.story

Ooo! Cute! Is he going to be drifting near England by any chance? Methinks I might fake a drowning when he's nearby and see if I can slip him the tongue while he's giving me the kiss of life. ;P He seems to be experienced in sea travel, and I'm guessing his parents wouldn't let him go unless they were sure of his abilities. Plus he looks pretty fit to me. I think he'll be fine as long as he doesn't get into any major disasters.

No, it's not. When I was a kid, I had a book about a 16 year old that managed it. He did it in the late '60's or early '70's. (I think it's still floating around the folks' house some place.) If he's ready to see the world on his own and has the knowledge of how to sail and that strong a passion, no, he's not too young. I'll be cheering him on every mile of the way. GO ZAC! D

I have heard about this young man about a year ago. He has been preparing for this adventure for more than 3 years. He is more than up to the task. Of course the two major things against him will be the sea and loneliness. It is one thing to be able to talk with people but seeing people is much more important. And of course the sea. The ever present adversary. Is he too young. No I don't really think so. With the training and experience he has he should do well. My best wishes to him in his endevor.

Sorry to say, the world can be a cruel place...he's taking a HUGE chance against his safety...forget the pirates that are still roaming the seas...there are many more governments which are much worse than any pirate hoped to be...and more...and, then there's the 'natural' elements, that some grown men who are experienced seafarers, would shake in their boots about... I pray for his safe return and wish him the best...however, if he were my son...he wouldn't start such a journey until he was of legal age...and then, I'd still advise against it... My son's life is much more important than a 'thrill ride'...sorry...

You are never too young to do anything. Unless the act is going to endanger you - e.g. driving (cars are not built for kids), alcohol and cigarettes (you can kill lots of brain cells, and you don't want to start when you don't have much). I think Zac is brave, and I wish him all the best!

I saw that on BBC, he's kind of cute.. but yeah if he's up to it and his parents have faith in him then he should be good to go, I think.

Once you see the video - you believe he can do it - and yes - he is brave.
