I have to Renew my Indian Passport. I currently live in New York. I want to reapply by mail. How do I do it?

I want to renew my passport, as my 10 years are up. The instructions on the consular website of New York state that they need my original passport. I am not too comfortable with sending the ORIGINAL PASSPORT in the mail. I also noticed A LOT of badly framed sentences on the website. Do I have to mail my original passport, or did they mean they needed copies of my original passport?

Answer:
The site says you may also go in person to the consulate...and since you live in new york and there is a consulate there, that may be best. then you can ask your questions and be sure you do things exactly as they require.
