Does your passport number change when renewing your passport?

Renewing US Passport -- will I have the same number?

  • My US passport expires a few days after I return from my trip. However, the country I plan to visit must issue a visa and they require at least 6 months before the expiration date of one's passport, in order to issue a visa. (I think this is common.) They want to prepare a letter for my visa but they need my passport number. Will my new passport have the same number as my old one, or will it be different? If you know of a link to the US gov't which answers this question, that would be great!

  • Answer:

Your new passport will have a new number, I believe. Contact the embassy for the country you are getting the visa for and ask them for advice. They will tell you if you need to wait until you get your new passport or not. You may be able to still get the visa on your old passport but you would need to travel with both the new one and the old one. Best thing to do is to contact the issuing embassy though as soon as possible.
