How do young people travel so often?
-
Everywhere I look, myspace, photobucket, school etc. I see photos and hear stories of young people, 18-28, traveling the world. They always appear to be in large groups and usually partying. Many of them have visited as many as 20 countries, even lived in a few. My question is, how can they afford to travel so much. First of all, it's expensive, then there's missing school, work, which results in even less money. I know people like to be spontaneous when young, but spontaneity does not provide money. I hear that in some places, like Australia, it is customary for many students to travel the world after college graduation. How is this done? I have a hard time believing parents pay for these travels, as not all parents are financially able either. Is it simply a matter of spending student loan money or maxing out credit cards? Answers from people who have done it, or are doing it are appreciated.

Answer:
well i am 19 and have only visited one place on my own which was new york city. i did travel out of the country on a summer exchange to germany. a lot of kids these days have jobs so that helps a lot. i found i could visit around 5 countries for under $3000. it takes a lot of looking around for deals. not going to expensive hotels, and getting rail passes (travel through many countries). the hostels in the usa are usually pretty bad, but there are a ton of really nice ones throughout europe. one thing i noticed with being in college, is that may is a cheap month to travel before the summer rush begins in june. almost all colleges get off in the first or second week of may so the students could take an advantage of traveling in the cheap month and possibly the first week of june. i went to new york city for three days to see a yankees redsox game for under 500 dollars, flights included. next summer i plan on visiting the countries where my roots are from. ireland, italy, and germany. some kids even visit a lot of european countries if they are an exchange student. sometimes they will get the chance to visit neighboring countries. european countries arent like the usa. germany is only about the size of a missouri and a half, so hopping from one country to another takes very little time. i wouldnt doubt if some kids are maxing out credit cards, and dont realize how huge of a hole they will be in afterwards, but i think most just save up their job money after a year or two of working. also, think how kids dont really have much money they have to spend on needed items. sure there is gas and such, but they dont have to pay house bills, electric bills or anything of that such, so any money they make, they can directly spend it for the trip. hope this helps. and ps. dont get on the student travel sites such as STA Travel, or Student Universe. they are usually more expensive than just getting on a website such as expedia or orbitz. hope this helps. contact me if you need any help

People I know use their credit cards. My best friend just did that recently. She's ALWAYS traveling and I assume that's how she pays for all her trips because she's in college and has only a part time job. I would never do that though. It may seem fun and exciting at the moment, but you gotta think long term. If I can't afford it at the moment it'll just have to wait. No need to go into debt just to travel. Credit cards should be used for things you need or an emergency. And this is coming from a 21 year old.

From what I've experienced, so many of these people that have visited and lived in exotic countries, have big shot and mad money parents. Sure it's a stereotype, but also I think it's a lot more common to have either parents that have a lot of money, and kids also have more access to brag about it with networking sites. The same thing happens with people that don't have as much money as well, but feel that they "failed" when they were young and feel they have to compensate by giving their children the greatest gifts in the world. I had a friend like this, his family went bankrupt yet he always had the hottest designer clothes. We live in a great society!

I'm 23 from Australia and all my friends that have travelled have borrowed the money either from parents or the bank and then had to work as they travel. I just got back from a trip to South Africa which my Dad lent the money to me for but have already paid him back. It is pretty common for uni students to travel after they finish studying but they mostly go on working holidays.
