The cost of an adult passport will rise £5.50, or 7%, to £77.50, the Home Office said. Fewer people are going abroad as families tighten their belts in the recession, meaning applications for passports were 400,000 below the expected level. The rises, which will come in to force in September, will see the price of a child passport increase £3 to £49. Fast-track adult applications, which take a week, will cost 15% more, up £15.50 to £112.50. Prices have shot up in the last decade. In 1997 a passport cost £18. In 2007 it cost £51 and by last year it was £72.

The IPS and FCO intend to introduce an increase in the price of a ten year adult passport from £72 to £77.50 in the first passport fee rise for passport services in the UK since 2007. There will also be a rise of £3 to the cost of a child's passport to £49. The increase will take effect from 3 September following final approval by the Privy Council tomorrow (8 July).

It's currently £72 for a full adult passport and I think it's around £40 for a child. Remember to give yourself a good four to six weeks for your passports to be cleared and sent to you. The Post Office will have better information and can help you to get your passports a wee bit quicker if you pay a checking fee.
