Do earplanes really work?

My ears do not equalize while on airplane, if I use "Earplanes" will a pair of over ear headphones hinder them?

  • The last time I flew to Hawaii my ears caused me a lot of pain as they did not equalize. Well, I am heading to Hawaii again. Before all of the "chew gum" and "drink water", "vasulva method", etc. answers come out the woodwork let me just say that none of those work for me. The only thing that does work me is a pair of Earplanes (ceramic in-ear plugs that help with the equalization), and sudafed to help with decongestion. My questions is specifically if anyone knows if I can use Earplanes, and wear over the ear headphones that cover my ear. Will the headphones cause a vacuum and make the Earplanes useless, or will the headphones even help me by reducing the air reaching my ears? I'd like to watch a movie on a hand held device during the flights, but I don't want to hinder the Earplanes. Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance to everyone helping out.

  • Answer:

For the Earplanes, you only need to use these at takeoff and landing. Once you reach cruise altitude, you can take them out for the remainder of the flight. They're not doing you any good anymore. I would think they would be uncomfortable to wear with headphones over them, these would interfere with the Earplanes, and your music would sound terrible

I always recommend the earplanes because my son sufferes terribly. He plays on his DS and Ipod just fine. I think you will be fine.
