Is toothpaste in hotels with DEG?

Hotel toothpaste?

  • during my frequent travels, I notice that the tothpaste suplied in hotels are made in China with no identifiable brand name. A check with the hotel management reveal their ignorance on the matter (or are they trying to cover up?) Are there any assurance that these toothpaste do not contain the harmful DEG substance? How to tell if a certain toothpaste contain DEG? Could the taste, color, texture or smell of the toothpaste provide any clues?

  • Answer:

Good for you for thinking of your health and safety while traveling! I would NOT rely on your own senses (taste, sight, smell, etc.) to assess whether a toothpaste contains DEG. What's more, the management of most hotels won't know the answer either, because the acquisition of toiletries is normally handled throught the company's purchasing division, which is ususally off-site. To be safe, do one of two things: Stay at hotel chains who use toiletry brands that you know and trust, OR bring your own toothpaste. If the hassles of airport security make you want to leave your own toothpaste at home, you might buy some from a drugstore at your destination. Happy Travels! Kango Traveler

Hotels commonly use the least expensive toiletries going. Even brand name bottles are often refilled with lesser quality non-brand name fountain style products. Ever wondered why that brand name shampoo or conditioner you use at home just doesn't look the same? Less concentrated or an off colour? I've worked at a number of 4 star hotels and discovered that Housekeeping has all sorts of cost-saving tricks. The toothpaste could very well be made in China and contain questionable ingredients. Don't use it, buy your own. Or use baking soda. At least you know what you're getting if you get it yourself!
