How Can I Get Rid Of The Fear Of Flying?

  • I am 18 and I haven't flown since I was about 11. For some reason I have become beyond scared of flying. When people start talking about you're going to fly pretty soon to Georgia, I start sweating and shaking, my stomach starts hurting, almost like an anxiety attack. I have to go see my grandparents and I have to fly but I am beyond scared, why? I wish I had to ability to stay completely calm and be at ease but I can't. I am probably the only one throughout my whole family who is afraid of flying. Everyone's always so calm when they fly but I wish that was me. HELP PLEASE!! Much Love. =)

    Most people never get over it. You can talk to your doctor about it and perhaps (s)he will give you a prescription to help with the anxiety attacks. m

I think everyone has some degree of anxiety when they fly. Some people are just better at masking their fears than others. Just because you'll be flying 7 miles above the earth and speeding along at 550 mph in a pressurized tube carrying 60,000 gallons of highly explosive fuel and possibly a few suicidal terrorists is no reason to be scared. Man-made machines never fail right? Go visit your doctor and and ask for some anti-anxiety medication, that's what I do. Just remember, if they're not napping in flight, you have two competent pilots hopefully without probable hangovers from the night before. Have a great flight!

I agree that medication works for some people. If you work out the odds of a plane mishap you will soon realise that the odds are in your favour. Thousands of planes fly everyday, thousands of people make a living out of flying on aircraft. I am petrified of flying but I do it because I don't want my fear to beat me. There is an overwhelming feeling of success when you arrive at the end of your flight in one piece. Just don't kiss the tarmac on arrival, that is reserved for the Pope.
