Can you take an owl out of the wild?

How could I take an owl through customs?

  • I'm interested in adopting a disabled owl in London, and then taking it back to America. Is there any way that would be possible? If so, what are the protocol?

    You would have to get special clearance from the US authorities to transport a wild animal into the US, which is doubtful that you could get. I suggest you contact the nearest US embassy or consulate to begin, and expect to be told NO outright or be referred to the US Department of Conservation. Even if you get the proper certificate (which is usually only allowed for zoos and professional wildlife rehabilitators), you will have to find an airline willing to accept such an animal. The only cruise ships that allow animals that are not service animals are those of Cunard, which only accepts dogs for their kennels on board. I suspect that the owl will have to stay in the UK, and hope you get him set up with a zoo or rehabilitator. Best of luck to you and to the owl!

At present you can't if the bird comes from Norfolk or Suffolk There is a temporary ban on importing birds from the UK(Norfolk and Suffolk counties) into the USA. The list of countries that this ban exists in is pretty extensive. If the birds are not from those counties then you can apply for a licence and start to import the bird.
