What are the chances of a plane crash?

  • Ok, so i have entered a contest type thing where i can win a trip to L.A. for a total make-over, but the only problem is, i'll have to fly there, since im all the way across the country from L.A..I'm really terrified of flying, its a phobia of mine, i know plane crashes aren't often and the media blows everything into epic proportions. but i just can't shake the feeling that the plane i board will be the one that happens to have technical difficulties, or have human error. i really want to know the probabilities of dying in a plane crash/having a plane crash..and also i'd like to know what i can do to calm my nerves before and during the flight (by the way, im only 16 so, drinking a bit is out of the question). this is kind of off topic but last year I over came my fear of being on a ship in a large body of water, they way i did it was being with someone i love and really holding on for dear life lol. so do you think this will also help with flying, but i must say, im more terrified of flying then traveling by ship. i was thinking of driving to L.A. but thats a 4-8 day trip depending on weather, traffic, and the number of stops I make. and i know driving in the most dangerous way of traviling, but i still feel safer. i dont know why though lol. so yea, if someone can help me it'd be greatly appreciated. thanks

I totally understand how you feel hunny. In December 2008, I have never flown before and the thought of it PETRIFIED me! But my boyfriend booked a holiday for us to Germany, and I knew I would have to fly. I still remember sitting at the airport, looking out at the plane we were waiting to board and hyperventilating at the sight of it! And the fear I felt when taking off for the first time. However, on coming into land, I realized I was seeing and doing THEE MOST AMAZING things ever! Then, in March 2009, 4 months later, I landed a job as a flight attendant! Flying that time, although being Absolutely petrified before, made me realize my dream. Flying it amazing! I've now been a flight attendant for over a year and absolutely love it! I've done well over 700 flights, with barely any trouble! There really isn't any way to overcome your fear, I just found researching plane crashes and the safest places to sit on a plane to be the most comforting. Best of luck to you!

From all over the world, there are about 30 million commercial airline flights each year. If you include cargo flights for delivery companies like UPS and FedEx, you probably have a another couple of million. In the US, there are about 27,000 flights every single day. Now, how many crashes do you hear about over the course of a year? Only a few worldwide. The news media spends a huge amount of time covering any airplane crash. So, a crash in which 150 people die gets a week of constant coverage, and another 2 weeks of occasional coverage, then followups once in a while over the next 6 months. In that same 6 month time span, about 20,000 people will have died in vehicle accidents - just within the US. The news media almost NEVER covers deaths in car accidents, but there are far more fatalities EVERY DAY in cars than there are in a year from plane crashes. Realistically, the probability is something like 1 in 10 million.
